We discovered these flowers on the woodland floor on Saturday. From the top: Bloodroot, Gaywings or Flowering Wintergreen, and Trout Lily. The Trout Lily is named so because of the speckles on its leaves that resemble the pattern on a trout.
We discovered a crazy orange brain-like growth on some pine trees. It is called Pine-Oak Gull Rust and is a fungal disease that requires both oaks and pines - spores blow from one species to the other. Pretty crazy looking!
And then in the stream, the Little Babe found this large freshwater clam.
It was a beautiful morning. There are so many fascinating things to see in the forest!
