Things got a little kinky around here over the weekend. A visit to the local nature center turned into a lesson in amphibian sex-ed.
There is a small man made pond that was filled with amphibians of all shapes and sizes. Red-Spotted Newts (mating in the picture above), Bullfrog tadpoles (the big one below), and Wood Frog tadpoles (all of the tiny ones). In case you were wondering - a newt is a salamander, but a salamander is not always a newt!
We also saw what we think is snail sex. They were floating in the pond looking about as busy as snails can look.
We did a naughty thing and absconded the nature center with a mason jar filled with scummy pond water and three tiny Wood Frog tadpoles. The animal rights activist side of me feels that it is cruel to keep them in a boring glass jar, hoping that they will survive. The Momma side of me says that it will be a totally cool learning experience if they actually stay alive long enough to turn into frogs. I'll let you know what happens!
