I was reading one of my old childhood books to the little babe one snowy day last week and in the book the gnomes were baking cookies and soft pretzels. I thought, "Hmm, a warm soft pretzel would taste really good right now." So during naptime I found a recipe and then it was pretzel making time! I was surprised with how soft and chewy they turned out. We finished that batch pretty quickly, so I then made them again. For the first batch I used all whole wheat flour. The second time, I only had 1 cup of whole wheat and since the little babe was sleeping, I didn't want to grind more flour (too loud), so I substituted rye flour and flaxseed for the remaining amount. The dough was stickier, but they still came out really good, so feel free to experiment a bit. The little babe's favorite part was the salt sprinkling, so we ended up with some very salty bites and then some very plain pretzels. Oh well, it's about the process, not the end result, right?
Here is the recipe: Homemade Soft Pretzels
