I have been loving the quietness that the cold brings, especially the snow. When we visited the park one morning last week, we were only a five minute walk from a suburban neighborhood, but it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Just the little babe and me in Snowland. We heard the crunch-crunch of our boots in the snow and the slush-slush of the sled dragging over the surface of the snow. We heard the twittering of bush birdies in the hedges and the loud squawking of blue jays. The little babe can be pretty chatty, but she is also pretty content just walking in the snow. I sometimes feel that I have to keep up some conversation so that she doesn't get bored, but I don't necessarily like that I think that. Kids need to know that it is okay to just BE.
I wanted to visit the community garden - I thought it would interesting to see the plant forms and garden structures in the snow. (This is what it looked like in Summer.) Other than the birds, the only signs of recent activity were some fox tracks in the snow circling the perimeter fencing.
I was so intent on taking photographs in the silence that I literally jumped when I heard an airplane and looked up to see it directly overhead.
With the illusion of peaceful solitude broken, my fingers aching from the cold, and the little babe getting tired, we pushed open the garden gate and headed back to reality. I think it is necessary to have peaceful silent moments like these to combat the noisy chaos of life.
What is your favorite Winter way to soak up the silence?
