In the 'back forty' we let the bushes and weeds grow up so that the dogs have a fun place to explore and play. There is a huge old white pine tree that creates a wonderful habitat for animals. At the base of that is a mysterious old pipe that someone dumped there at some point in our house's past. It is two pieces of pipe connected in the middle, buried in the ground about a foot down, and it makes a perfect hiding spot for chipmunks. For the past two years now, our dog Ruby, the avid hunter (an odd trait for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi) has unearthed this pipe in her quest to get to the chipmunks that taunt her by emitting a high pitched squeak. It drives Ruby nuts and entertains her for the large part of an hour. Birkie even gives up her toy fetching to join in the hunt.
