On our trip to Maine, we visited Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland. It was interesting to see the contrast of old and new - a lighthouse that has stood there since 1897, the solar panels of this modern age, and then the fishing boats coming and going, an ancient livelihood that is still going strong today.
On Saturday, we drove to Hollis, Maine and spent the night at Lily Brook Farm. We stayed there last October and really enjoyed it. Give us a cute place to stay and some farm animals and we're happy! Since we have discovered that the little babe has a strange fear of four-legged farm animals (yet she can handle herself amidst a pack of six hungry dogs), I thought it would be good for her to have some more exposure to them. She did okay, no tears, but she definitely did not want to pet the lamb sharing her name. I did!
The window in our living room looked right into the barnyard - the best view on the farm! We could see the two horses, two donkeys, three goats, two guinea fowl (not my fav), chickens, and one beast of a ram. The ewes and lambs were in the barn.
The ram arrived shortly after we got there. We had contacted our host, Nina, to let her know that we would be arriving earlier than we had planned. The weather was pretty nasty - cold and rainy - not the best weather for walking around town. So we grabbed lunch at our favorite restaurant in Portland, Flatbread Pizza, made a quick stop into Whole Foods to grab some salads for dinner, and then headed straight to the farm. Nina had told us that she wouldn't be there yet. She was doing something with a lamb?, ram?; I couldn't quite hear over the phone. We were relaxing in the living room when we saw a truck and livestock trailer drive around back. My husband thought he saw something in the trailer. The next moment I see a huge white ram fly around the corner of the trailer with someone attempting to hold onto him! The ram escaped and for the next half hour, we had a show better than anything on TV, as Nina and her friend tried to get him to go where they wanted. No such luck, which was better for our viewing enjoyment!
In the morning we were able to go in the barnyard and see the animals up close.
Hope you enjoyed your quick trip to Maine!
