I decided I wanted to make something fun for my little babe. Like everybody else today, I like owl designs. Why are owls hip now? I've also noticed that foxes are all over children's attire and toys. Weird. But I think owls are adorable, and I decided "Whoo, Whoo" needs a stuffed owl from China? I can make one myself.
I had some wool leftover from the scarf turned leg warmers, an old pair of cashmere socks, and some cashmere scraps from the scarf turned vest and pants. The little beak is a piece of elastic from a pair of Victoria's Secret shorts (a G-rated pair). So it is a soft and fuzzy, muted colored owl - just right for Fall. I wanted to use the striped wool for the back of the owl also, but I was having problems sewing it on the machine, so I went with just a cotton back. I had to stitch all the parts on by hand, so its a little rough. I could use the word "wonky" - I just saw that on one of the British blogs I follow - what a great word. My hand stitching is definitely wonky.
First I hand stitched on all the individual pieces, then I turned the right sides together and sewed the body on the machine, leaving a 2" gap. Then I turned it inside out and stuffed it with an old pair of pajama bottoms that I cut into little squares. Then I had to sew the gap closed and I don't know a clean way to do that so that the stitches don't show on the outside. Oh well, the little babe won't care. The trouble is that it looks a whole lot like a dog toy, so I'm going to have to keep it away from the furry crew otherwise they will destroy in 5 minutes what it took me 2 hours to make.
It is a blustery Fall day here, so hope you have something soft, fuzzy, and warm to wear this weekend. "Whoo, Whoo" is up for hot apple cider, lots of tea, and some Apple Spice Muffins? Stay tuned...
