A new path for our Sunday morning hike. Only 10 minutes from home, but nearly silent. Oh, except for the gun shot blasts exploding from the shooting range. We were in state gamelands and after all, the purchase of such lands are largely funded by hunters' fees. Still, it rather breaks the serene moment. Frost on the hedgerows, birds' nests in plain view, ice crystals in the shadows. A great morning. I wish I knew enough about birds to figure out who made the nests. I think the top nest looks like a perfect spot for a mouse to curl up in. When I tried to Google if that really happens (mice taking over unused bird nests), the top search results were from pest control companies. Sad. Speaking of mice, I had mentioned a couple weeks ago how I was kept awake by mice in my walls. I convinced my husband to find humane no-kill traps for them. Yes, there is such a thing and yes, they do work! It only took three nights to catch two mice. The first mouse had no self control and we heard the trap spring only minutes after setting it. Cheddar cheese and peanut butter were on the menu. Since the nights were chilly and we didn't want to dump these thin skinned house mice outside unprotected, my husband freed them near the shed at our Airbnb next door. The little babe then quietly asked if there were any foxes in our neighborhood. I don't think so my dear, but oh, listen to that owl call!
Wishing everybody a great start to the week.
